The 150th Caulfield Cup has attracted 124 nominations for the $6 million Group 1 over 2400 metres at Caulfield on Saturday 17 October.

Heading them is Half Yours, the reigning Melbourne Cup winner — which is the sort of entry that sets the tone for an entire staying spring.

Who has the numbers

Chris Waller leads all nominators with 18 entries. Ciaron Maher and Joseph O’Brien have 15 apiece.

The Australian list also includes Sir Delius, Treasurethe Moment, Cosmic Crusader, Green Spaces, Yellow Jersey, King Pedro and She’s A Hustler.

The European raid

The international contingent is deep. Aidan O’Brien has entered Causeway. Willie Mullins has three — Gaucher, Love Me Tender and Thread Of Gold. Andrew Balding has Fantasy World, Mount Atlas and Tarriance. Roger Varian nominated Enfjaar and William Haggas Tenability.

Handicap staying races worth $6 million do not need to advertise themselves in Europe any more, and the entry sheet reflects that.

Key dates

Late nominations close on 8 September at $6,500. First declarations are due 22 September.

The Caulfield Cup sits a week before the Cox Plate — which this year is at Flemington, not Moonee Valley — and just over two weeks before the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday 3 November.

Where the Cup fits

The 2026 Melbourne spring runs from the Memsie Stakes on 29 August through to 29 November. The staying path into October goes Turnbull Stakes (3 October, Flemington), Caulfield Cup (17 October), Cox Plate (24 October), Victoria Derby (31 October) and Melbourne Cup (3 November).

For a horse like Half Yours, the Caulfield Cup is the question of whether last November was a peak or a plateau.
