Futures betting is a different game: you're pricing not just ability but the probability a horse actually gets to the race, at the right distance, in the right condition. Most early futures bets lose to a scratching, not a slow horse.
That said, every spring a handful of horses are clearly under-priced in August because their path to a major is more certain than the market appreciates.
How to shop futures
The checklist: a stated target from a stable that means it, a proven pattern for the race's conditions, ballot-exemption or enough rating to guarantee a start, and a preparation with an obvious lead-up sequence.
Horses ticking all four are rare, and they're the only futures bets worth the exposure. Everything else is better taken on the day at a shorter but safer price.
